Enjoyment From the Ephemeral Nature of the Internet

As I was browsing the web a few days ago, I stumbled across a blog entry complaining about the lack of preservation of the internet. Now, I agree with the sentiment presented in the entry: There is a dangerous amount of important information that is subject to link rot, often with no physical counterparts to the information. There is much to be said for the state of information preservation in the digital age and certainly a lot to be said about how private parties (corporations) do not care whatsoever for preservation since it doesn't present profit for them.

However, while those conversations are important, I'd like to present a different case, one born of me calming my own existentialism. Nothing lasts forever, so we should enjoy the moments we have while we have them. Of course, I like old things, and am glad for the archivists who have worked tirelessly to keep history around in all of its sources, but through the difficulties I've had searching for old media, I've come to understand that these searches will only get harder with time, and the things I know as current will one day become harder and harder to find.

I've already seen it with the video games I grew up with, and there was a time where I felt dread about that fact, and it was actually one of the feelings that drove me to try to market my game and art as best I could, so that it "wouldn't be forgotten so easily". Nowadays I've grown to try to live in the moments I have as well as try to preserve them for the future. Of course, I'm not an archivist by any means, so my collections are really just a little bit of a hobby for the time being, media and stories that I can share to my nephews and nieces, although I have started looking into ways I might be able to share these things in the future, as to keep the history "current" so to speak. So far it seems like Torrent seeding is my best bet, but I don't know how to do it, and it's very hard to learn.
